I started this blog in May 2007 and since then at various times I have felt the need to have greater control over the blog which WordPress.com doesn’t allow. Since I have no background in graphics and web design, I kept myself from moving to a self hosted blog. However, I have now decided to take the plunge and move the site to a hosting of my own and see how it goes.

During the next few hours the website may therefore be unavailable, links might not work or the layout might look messed up. Kindly bear with me. By the end of it, I hope to have all links, comments and posts intact. Meanwhile, this site will still continue to be available at vaibhavsharma.wordpress.com.

Hope to see you on the otherside.

Ladies and Gentelmen Openatownrisk.com is back. What this means is that the elusive site is accessible once more so you can take a shot at watching the most insane video ever produced and also win an exclusive T-shirt if you are in the top 500. All you need to do is break four seals to unlock everything, simply breaking the first will give you access to the video.

This is where there is a huge glitch on Nokia’s part and I mean huge. The video that is supposedly in the Download! folder, which will help you unlock the seal, simply isn’t present on some phones like the E71. Fortunately I had my E90 and was able to get hold of it, for those of you who don’t have this luxury, I have uploaded it to Nokia’s very own Mosh. The other three seals require a webcam and the wallpaper and the ringtone and a mic. If you don’t have a webcam, a trial of Mobiola’s Web Cam application or WWIGO should help.

If you can’t seem to get hold of the wallpaper or the ringtone also, then you can find them here. It appears that there is still room at the top, I was able to be among the first 500 and I tried 5 minutes back. So get cracking before time runs out!

Workouts and select a Trail.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/rediscovering-sportstracker-with-the-n-0.jpg" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" /" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" />

One of the things I have been wanting to do for quite a while now is extensively try out the latest version of the multifaceted ‘Sports Tracker’ application. Like I’ve said earlier, since the time it first came out, it has undergone so much change and improvements that ’sportstracker’ is an understatement and well, a little misleading and because of this a lot of us fail to put it to its best use which is not sports but recording a trek/trip.

The lower range of the Himalayas is pretty near from where I live and the day before yesterday’s cloudy and windy weather was a perfect invitation in the otherwise sultry heat. So, I and a few friends decided to go uphill for lunch, a one and a half our drive. To give us company, we had a range of Nokia devices from the N78 to the E90 to the N82 and the E71. I did not have sportstracker installed on the N82, so I decided the N78 was going to be the phone for the job. (In the end, it proved to be a wise choice, reasons below.)

It is human tendency to try and revisit or relive the past and that is why we enjoy pictures and videos so much. With advancements in technology, this has become an even more enjoyable experience and sports tracker and newer Nseries/Eseries take it to a completely new level. Now not only can we know the exact position on a map where the photos and videos were taken but also trace the path we took getting there. All of this in my book adds up to one hell of an experience, not only for those involved but also for the friends/family back home who can simply hit the sportstracker website and see your progress live.

In my case, this was a small trip and the black line shows the route we followed, the photo and video icons show the exact location where those shots were taken and the map also shows our highest/lowest points along with the fastest/slowest ones.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/rediscovering-sportstracker-with-the-n-1.jpg" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" /" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" />

If you haven’t tried using this before, I recommend using this link to visit the above trail on the Sports Tracker website and get a feel of the experience for yourself. Another good things is that sportstracker also allows you to keep your trails private or share it only with friends or with anyone. This coupled with live tracking is beautiful, however from now on when you lie about your location to anyone make sure they have no clue what Sports Tracker can do!

Another way of viewing and showing off your trail is the Nseries Life Widget, which can be embedded into your Facebook, iGoogle, Blogger or other profiles.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/rediscovering-sportstracker-with-the-n-2.jpg" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" /" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" />

Clicked media automatically pops up on the trail with an option of a map or satellite based background.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/rediscovering-sportstracker-with-the-n-3.jpg" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" /" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" />

There is an option to select different journeys, only the the ones set public are visible.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/rediscovering-sportstracker-with-the-n-4.jpg" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" /" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" />

The widget also allows you to view all the uploaded media separately. Details on how to set it up here.

THE APPLICATION

Coming back to the Sports Tracker application, uploading a trail is a breeze once you have paired the service with the phone.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/rediscovering-sportstracker-with-the-n-5.jpg" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" /" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" />

Just navigate to the Training Diary>Workouts and select a Trail.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/rediscovering-sportstracker-with-the-n-6.jpg" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" /" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" />

Make sure you have a SIM inserted and hit upload.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/rediscovering-sportstracker-with-the-n-7.jpg" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" /" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" />

Once the route is uploaded, it automatically asks for permission to search for and upload pictures and video taken during the journey. This is done by accessing the time stamp of each picture/video.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/rediscovering-sportstracker-with-the-n-8.jpg" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" /" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" />

Now simply login to the sports tracker website and view the ‘workout’. (Click to enlarge.)

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/rediscovering-sportstracker-with-the-n-9.jpg" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" /" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" />

Clicking on a image icon brings up the relevant geo-tagged image.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/rediscovering-sportstracker-with-the-n-10.jpg" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" /" alt="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" title="Rediscovering SportsTracker With The N78" />

The videos are also streamed in a similar manner.

THE ROLE OF THE N78

Before yesterday I wasn’t too impressed with it. Infact I almost didn’t like it. The keys, FP2 didn’t seem all that great and the psychological impact of coming down from a 5MP camera to 3.2 was too much. But yesterday’s play made me reconsider my opinion. The N78 is essentially a multimedia device with a focus on music and the camera. The music part I already knew was awesome, plugging in a N78 vis-a-vis a N82 into my car stereo itself spelled out a difference. The sound with the N78 was much deeper, stronger and had the right treble & bass.

What I liked about the camera was that it was fast (at least as fast as the N82, if not faster), clicking multiple images while the car was moving was no issue at all and the auto focus performed well. The battery too held on beautifully inspite of sports tracker continuously running in the background for 5 hours, some music and after taking over a hundred pictures. I left home at 8 in the morning and around the same time in the evening the phone was still alive, albeit with one bar left. The N78 had performed ‘its role’ to perfection.

Although the N78 still isn’t my kind of handset, but from now on it’ll be a tougher call between it and the N82. For me, what this experience has done is make me look forward to the N96, much more than earlier.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/t-nav-the-next-killer-application-for-s-0.jpg" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" /" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" />

Ladies and Gentlemen it is my pleasure to present to you, what in my opinion is going to be the next killer application for S60 devices. In the comments section of the QWERTY v. T9 speed test article, Tim mentioned an application called T9 Nav which I have only been able to try it today and it has blown my mind.

T9 Nav is a mobile search application that lets you find anything on your phone by just typing in the first few letters of whatever you’re looking for. As soon as you press a number, it starts looking for anything on your device that matches the numbers or the letters on that key. For example if you press “2” it finds any contacts, calendar items, ringtones, applications, bookmarked websites or anything else beginning with 2, a, b or c. Read on for a complete run through.

Once installed, much like Vista, the application indexes all your files be it songs, contacts, bookmarks and so on. It features an auto start option so you don’t need to worry about launching it everytime, it however remains visible in the open applications and doesn’t feature a hidden mode so far.

The place where the application is especially useful is if you have a lot of applications installed and they are kept within folders and sub folders; now in order to launch them all you need to do is key in their name. This application also betters Handy Taskman’s search and launch functionality by giving direct, from the standby screen, access.

As you press more keys it continues to refine the results, when you see what you want in the list, just click on it and the application will take you there. Here are a few screengrabs from my play with T9 Nav.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/t-nav-the-next-killer-application-for-s-1.jpg" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" /" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" />

1. Trying to open ‘Notes’ by typing its T9 equivalent.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/t-nav-the-next-killer-application-for-s-2.jpg" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" /" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" />

2. An example of filtration with increased typing.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/t-nav-the-next-killer-application-for-s-3.jpg" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" /" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" />

3. Reaching ‘Clock’ with three key presses.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/t-nav-the-next-killer-application-for-s-4.jpg" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" /" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" />

4. Contacts, my name.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/t-nav-the-next-killer-application-for-s-5.jpg" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" /" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" />

5. The ‘-’ in the name doesn’t matter.

OTHER EXAMPLES

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/t-nav-the-next-killer-application-for-s-6.jpg" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" /" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" />

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/t-nav-the-next-killer-application-for-s-7.jpg" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" /" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" />

(While this seems to work for most applications, on the N82 curiously the Music player and Camera don’t show up when their name is keyed in. Most likely this is a Beta issue and will be sorted out. If something else doesn’t work, please leave a comment.)

The newer Eseries devices like the E71 have brought such access from the standby screen functionality to contacts, in a very polished manner but this is taking it to a completely new level.

<img src="http://www.symbian-news.info/wp-content/uploads/t-nav-the-next-killer-application-for-s-8.jpg" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" /" alt="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" title="T9 Nav: The Next Killer Application For S60" />

I still dig the class and options a simple right press of the D pad gives but for those Nseries siblings or other S60 devices who lack such functionality, T9 Nav is god sent. The application is still in Beta and you might experience certain problems while using it, but fortunately the developers are listening and also be sure to send in feedback or suggessions so that we may have a better application.

It shows the time in either large digits or on a large dial, easy to read even without the background lighting. It also displays the date, the day of the week, the selected profile, and it uses icons to show the locked status of the keyboard, incoming SMS, e-mail and voicemail messages, missed calls, silent ringing, alarms set and Bluetooth status. The digital version automatically switches between 12-hour and 24-hour display as set in the phone preferences.

It’s a genuine screen saver integrated into the operating system of the phone, not a separate application running in the background constantly. This means a very small memory footprint, negligible use of the phone’s resources, including approximately the same low battery consumption as with the original screen saver.

When word of the Nokia Pilots program first came out, I skipped writing about it for the simple reason that we didn’t know what it was going to be. Was it merely going to be access to alpha applications or was it going to be much more, the stuff of our dreams?

But having read this post by Mikko Lintunenof Nokia Pilots on the Beta Labs pages, I write this post as a Nokia fanboy who’s long time dream has just come true. Nokia Pilots is going to be big, selected ‘Pilots’ will have access to the latest concept devices that may only exist as protypes as well as trialling latest services and software. Stuff, that has NOT been publicly announced.

Nokia Pilots program offers an opportunity to be involved in the design, development and/or testing phases of concepts, products and/or services - as a Nokia Pilot, you may get a chance to see the latest products and services before anyone else.

Having said that, there is a need to restrict the access to this type of material and content. Thus, we require in some cases non-disclosure agreements (NDA’s) with Nokia Pilots.

The last few lines of the above quote have got me all excited and wanting to go out right now and get a nice expensive pen for that signature. This is your chance to be a part of the company that is revolutionising the way business is done, never has a company been so open and in sync with its target audience. We have all read about how Nokia has the best blogger relations program, but this is taking it one step further - to anyone who cares.

If you’ve been living under a rock and don’t quite know what Nokia Pilots is, get acquainted here. The registrations will open in September and will most likely be country based, as will be the entire program on some level. So my guess is if Nokia has a research facility in your country, you will have a slight advantage. Once registered, Pilots will be pre-screened with an automatic search algorithm for various projects based on their selected fields of interest, regular Beta Labs contributors will have edge though.

I personally can’t wait to sign my first NDA and get cracking at a proto device, what are you looking forward to?
